Mark Stanislav,It Governance Publishing: Two-Factor Authentication

Two-Factor Authentication

Description

Passwords are not enough A password is a single authentication factor - anyone who has it can use it. No matter how strong it is, if it's lost or stolen, it's entirely useless at keeping information private. To secure your data properly, you also need to use a separate, secondary authentication factor. Data breaches are now commonplace In recent years, large-scale data breaches have increased dramatically in both severity and number, and the loss of personal information - including password data - has become commonplace. Furthermore, the fact that rapidly evolving password-cracking technology and the habitual use - and reuse - of weak passwords has rendered the security of username and password combinations negligible, and you have a very strong argument for more robust identity authentication. Consumers are beginning to realise just how exposed their personal and financial information is, and are demanding better security from the organisations that collect, process and store it. This has led to a rise in the adoption of two-factor authentication (TFA or 2FA). In the field of authentication security, the method of proving identity can be broken down into three characteristics - roughly summarised as 'what you have', 'what you are' and 'what you know'. Two-factor authentication relies on the combination of two of these factors. Product overview TFA is nothing new. It's mandated by requirement 8.3 of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and banks have been using it for years, combining payment cards ('what you have') and PINs ('what you know'). If you use online banking you'll probably also have a chip authentication programme (CAP) keypad, which generates a one-time password (OTP). What is new is TFA's rising adoption beyond the financial sector. Two-Factor Authentication provides a comprehensive evaluation of popular secondary authentication methods, such as: Hardware-based OTP generation SMS-based OTP delivery Phone call-based mechanisms Geolocation-aware authentication Push notification-based authentication Biometric authentication factors Smart card verification As well as examining MFA (multi-factor authentication), 2SV (two-step verification) and strong authentication (authentication that goes beyond passwords, using security questions or layered security), the book also discusses the wider application of TFA for the average consumer, for example at such organisations as Google, Amazon and Facebook. It also considers the future of multi-factor authentication, including its application to the Internet of Things (IoT). Increasing your password strength will do absolutely nothing to protect you from online hacking, phishing attacks or corporate data breaches. If you're concerned about the security of your personal and financial data, you need to read this book. About the author Mark Stanislav is an information technology professional with over a decade's varied experience in systems administration, web application development and information security. He is currently a senior security consultant for the Strategic Services team at Rapid7. Mark has spoken internationally at nearly 100 events, including RSA, DEF CON, SecTor, SOURCE Boston, ShmooCon and THOTCON. News outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Al Jazeera America, Fox Business, MarketWatch, CNN Money, Yahoo Finance, Marketplace and The Register have featured Mark's research, initiatives and insights on information security.

Advanced Optical Packet Switches Over Wdm Networks

Description

In this book, we focus on the design of efficient optical switch architectures with reduced complexity to resolve packet contention in asynchronous OPS networks. In particular, the main contributions of this book can be summarized as follows: (1) propose a new FDL-based switch architecture that achieves the same performance as that of best known architectures but with a reduced hardware complexity, (2) conduct a detailed study of the impact and complexity of using WCs in the design of optical switch architectures, and (3) develop and analyze a new hybrid OPS switch architecture that has a smaller packet loss, average switching delay, and hardware complexity compared to exiting optical switch architectures.

John Boyne: The Dare

The Dare

Description

At the start of his school holidays, Danny Delaney is looking forward to a trouble-free summer. But when his mother returns home one afternoon, flanked by two policemen, he knows that something terrible has happened. Mrs Delaney has accidentally hit a small boy with her car. The boy is in a coma at the local hospital and nobody knows if he will ever wake up. Consumed by guilt, Danny's mother closes herself off, while Danny and his father are left to pick up the pieces of their fractured family. Told in John Boyne's unique style from the point of view of a twelve-year-old boy, "The Dare" is a brilliantly compelling story about how one moment can change a family forever.

Each year, natural disasters threaten the strength and stability of communities worldwide. Yet responses to the challenges of recovery vary greatly and in ways that aren't always explained by the magnitude of the catastrophe or Alien Escape download PDF the amount of aid provided by national governments or the international community. The difference between resilience and disrepair, Daniel P. Aldrich shows, lies in the depth of communities' social capital. "Building Resilience" highlights the critical role of social capital in the ability of a community to withstand disaster and rebuild the infrastructure and ties that are at the foundation of any community. Aldrich examines the post-disaster responses of four distinct communities - Tokyo following the 1923 earthquake, Kobe after the 1995 earthquake, Tamil Nadu after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and New Orleans post-Katrina - and finds that those with robust social networks were better able to coordinate recovery. In addition to quickly disseminating information and assistance, communities with an abundance of social capital were able to minimize the migration of people and resources out of the area.

Red petals and rope binding: The ultimate Araki collection Decades worth of images have been distilled down to 568 pages of photographs in this ultimate retrospective collection of Nobuyoshi Araki's work, selected by the artist himself. First published as a limited edition and now available as a standard TASCHEN edition, the curation delves deep into Araki's best-known imagery: Tokyo street scenes; faces and foods; colorful, sensual flowers; female genitalia; and the Japanese art of kinbaku, or bondage. As girls lay bound but defiant and glistening petals assume suggestive shapes, Araki plays constantly with patterns of subjugation and emancipation, death and desire and with the slippage between serene image and shock. Describing his bondage photographs as a a collaboration between the subject and the photographer, Araki seeks to come closer to his female subjects through photography, emphasizing the role of spoken conversation between himself and the model. In his native Japan, he has attained cult status for many women who feel liberated by his readiness to photograph the expression of their desire. Text in English, French, and German "

Elizabeth Wein: Black Dove, White Raven

Black Dove, White Raven

Description

"Think of the sky!" Delia gave Momma's hands a shake. "Think of the sky in Ethiopia! What will it be like to fly in Africa?" This New York Times bestseller is a story of survival, subterfuge, espionage and identity. Rhoda and Delia are American stunt pilots who perform daring aerobatics to appreciative audiences. But while the sight of two girls wingwalking - one white, one black - is a welcome novelty in some parts of the USA, it's an anathema in others. Rhoda and Delia dream of living in a world where neither gender nor ethnicity determines their life. When Delia is killed in a tragic accident, Rhoda is determined to make that dream come true. She moves to Ethiopia with her daughter, Em, and Delia's son, Teo. Em and Teo have adapted to scratching a living in a strange land, and feel at home here; but their parents' legacy of flight and the ability to pilot a plane places them in an elite circle of people watched carefully by the Ethiopian emperor, Haile Selassie, who dreams of creating an air force for his fledgling nation. As Italy prepares for its invasion of Ethiopia, Em and Teo find themselves inextricably entangled in the crisis - and they are called on to help. Elizabeth Wein is a leading voice in young adult historical fiction. Her novel Rose Under Fire was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and shortlisted for the Costa Award 2014. Fans of The Book Thief and Carmen Reid's Cross My Heart will love this. Look out for Elizabeth's other books Code Name Verity and Rose Under Fire. Mies Van Der Rohe: Less is More - Finding Perfection in Purity

Description

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was one of the founding fathers of modern architecture. The creator of the Barcelona Pavilion (1929), the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois (1945-1951) and the Seagram Building in New York (1954-1958), Mies was one of the founders of a new architectural style. Well known for his motto "less is more," he sought a kind of refined purity in architectural expression that was not seen in the reduced vocabulary of other Bauhaus members. His goal was not simply building for those of modest income but building economically in terms of sustainability, both in a technical and aesthetical way; the use of industrial materials such as steel and glass were the foundation of this approach. Though the extreme reduction of form and material in his work garnered some criticism, over the years many have tried - mostly unsuccessfully - to copy his original and elegant style. This book explores more than 20 of his projects between 1906 and 1967, from his early work around Berlin to his most important American buildings.
